With acquired knowledge and skills in mathematics and science, engineers are responsible for the design, manufacture, and operation of a wide variety of structures, devices, machines, and processes. As a result, engineers can be found in several sectors of the job market. They are also some of the highest paid professionals in the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), these are the best-paying careers in engineering:

Petroleum Engineers

Petroleum engineers work on drilling sites, usually for oil companies, and are charged with the task of developing plans or tools for extracting oil and gas from beneath the earth in the most efficient or profitable manner. According to the BLS, Petroleum Engineers pulled in a median yearly salary of $114,080 in 2010, making them the highest paid professionals in engineering.

Nuclear Engineers

A distant second on the list of top-paid careers in engineering is nuclear engineering, with a median annual pay of $99,920. Nuclear engineers—who mainly work at power plants or for energy companies—are responsible for developing instruments and systems to derive benefits from nuclear energy.

Computer Hardware Engineers

Components like microprocessors, circuit boards, and routers are the work of computer hardware engineers. As a result, they mainly work for computer manufacturing companies. The BLS reported that computer hardware engineers took home a median annual wage of $98,810 in 2010.

Aerospace Engineers

Aerospace engineers work in industries involved with the design of aircraft, missiles, spacecraft, and national defense systems. They also test aerospace and aircraft products for functionality. According to the BLS, they made a median annual salary of $97,480 in 2010.

Chemical Engineers

Chemical engineers—who took home a median annual salary of $90,300 in 2010—use their extensive knowledge of chemistry, biology, and physics to produce pharmaceuticals, fuel, certain types of chemicals, and other products. They mainly work for research laboratories, refineries, or pharmaceutical companies.

Electrical and Electronics Engineers

According to the BLS, electrical and electronics engineers made a median annual wage of $87,180 in 2010. These engineers are responsible for designing and manufacturing a wide variety of electronic or electrical components and products, including electric motors, generators, digital media players, and GPS navigation devices.

Materials Engineers

While computer, electrical, aerospace, and electronics engineers design and build components and products, materials engineers create the materials used to test them. Usually working in factories, research and development laboratories, or manufacturing companies, materials engineers pulled in a median salary of $83,120 in 2010.

Mining and Geological Engineers

Mining and geological engineers—who took in $82,870 in 2010, according to the BLS—are responsible for designing mines for safely and efficiently removing minerals like coal and metals. Not surprisingly, mining and geological engineers can be found mostly working for mining firms or consulting companies.

Biomedical Engineers

Mainly working at health care facilities, research laboratories, or biomedical firms, biomedical engineers contribute to the quality and effectiveness of health care through the design of systems and products. Marine Engineers

Rounding off the list are marine engineers. True to the name, marine engineers design, maintain, and help build ships and accompanying mechanical systems. They made a median annual wage of $79,920 in 2010, according to the BLS.
